Self-Harm is a distressing feature of the behaviour of some young people. Its complex and perplexing causes can prove highly challenging for professionals to understand and work with.

 This one-day seminar aims to:

• Develop an understanding of what constitutes self-harm and share experiences of working with young people who self-harm.

• Explore the underlying causes of this kind of behaviour, and what forms of distress the behaviour may be communicating.

• Identify the particular support needs of young people who self-harm, what is effective and what can be unhelpful.

• Explore proactive methods of listening to and supporting young people who self -harm.

• Clarify when to seek further referral and identify appropriate support agencies.

• Establish effective means of liaison with with support agencies and carers.

• Identify our own needs for support, guidance and supervision when working with young people who self-harm.
