Basic Counselling Skills Further Details

This is an exciting and popular course developed by Procounsel and accredited by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (C.P.C.A.B.) who are registered with the Department for Education and Skills (D.f.E.S.) and the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (Q.C.A.).

The Basic Counselling Skills for Pastoral and Support Staff course is designed specifically for staff, professional and non-professional - who work closely with young people in schools or other educational services.

Designed by counsellors with long-standing experience within the fields of education and young people services, the courses are tailor-made to reflect the specific needs and situations that arise within individual working contexts in order to make them relevant to your school or service. Working with staff and managers we are able to ensure that the course you book has been designed specifically for your own school or service, to reflect the issues and concerns particular to it whilst at the same time providing staff with a sound knowledge of basic counselling skills and how to apply them within the context of their work.

The course has proved extremely popular with a wide variety of staff. Head and Deputy Head Teachers, SENCOs, Learning Support Assistants, EBD Co-ordinators, Subject Teachers, School Liaison Officers, Heads of Year, Guidance Co-ordinators, Learning Mentors, Staff from PRUs, School Nurses, staff from Special Schools, and many more have been delegates on courses.

The Basic Counselling Skills course provides an ideal opportunity to develop the skills of effective listening, questioning, reflecting, challenging and goal-setting within a safe and clear environment. The course addresses issues of trust, boundaries and confidentiality and also covers areas such as Child Protection, Open Door policies, working within a statutory context, referral systems and liaising with other professionals.

All our trainers are highly skilled and ensure that each course reflects the needs of each group of trainees. Group size is limited to a maximum of 16 trainees per trainer, to ensure an optimum environment for discussion and skills practice. Schools wishing to train more than 16 people may book a course with two trainers.

The accredited course is 3 days, usually with the dates spaced by one to two weeks in order to allow for practice and consolidation of skills learnt prior to the next session, where discussion and reflection is encouraged. The spacing of dates can be more flexible although ideally should not be more than one month to ensure optimum retention of skills acquired.

The written component to the course is minimal. In order to gain the accreditation we ask that trainees provide a 500-word Extended Learning Statement that is then moderated by the C.P.C.A.B., our awarding body. This is really a brief statement where trainees demonstrate an understanding of the skills they feel have gained from the course and how these can be employed within their work with young people.

At the end of the course, once all the Extended Learning Statements have been received, they are submitted for moderation to the C.P.C.A.B. and subject to this each trainee is awarded a formal certificate by them. This process usually takes up to three months.

However, It is perfectly feasible to have some staff who want to provide an Extended Learning Statement and some who don’t on the same course. Moreover, if you would like to run this course, but your budget will not allow for the accredited option, you can choose the same course without accreditation. Talk to us about this option.

Progression onto further courses is also possible. We are able to offer a second stage course which offers trainees who have attended the first course the opportunity to further develop their skills and acquire a recognised qualification in Basic Counselling Skills.
