Working with Young People with an Eating Disorder
This one day workshop is designed for professionals who work with young people in a range of settings. The aim of the course is to raise awareness for about eating difficulties and to enable them to communicate effectively with young people who may be experiencing eating problems and provide them with positive forms of support.
The courses addresses:
• Current research around the prevalence of the problem.
• Different forms of eating difficulty and how they may manifest themselves..
• Feelings and attitudes: How do we feel about the issue? What feelings and attitudes about the problem may be around for others (family, other professionals, peers, wider society)?
• Why might a young person develop eating problems ? An exploration of the common triggers for eating difficulties. Understanding some of the complexities of the problem.
• The signs and behaviours: Identifying children and young people who may be experiencing eating problems. Issues around secrecy and control.
• Creating a safe environment for young people to acknowledge any difficulties and explore their options.
• How can we help ? Working sensitively. Developing empathic listening skills and working at the young persons pace. Practical ideas for supporting young people with eating difficulties.
• The importance of confidentiality. Who else might need to know? Developing a multi-agency approach to working with young people experiencing eating problems.
Young people experiencing eating disorders can prove amongst the most troubled and troubling to understand and support.
For professionals who have to work closely with clients or students with such difficulties, understanding why these difficulties may have developed, and knowing how best to work with them is often a challenging, perplexing and highly demanding process.
A clear understanding of the current theory and practice around the issue of young people and eating disorders is essential, and can help to ensure that as professionals we are in a position to provide the best support possible to those we work with.
