Basic Counselling Skills for Professionals and Non-Professionals Working with Children.
This course is ideal for anyone working with young people.
Young people experiencing emotional distress are increasingly turning to their teachers, Social Workers, Youth Workers, Family Support Workers, Mentors, Connexions Advisors, and other staff for support.
Staff often find themselves offering a listening ear to children and young people experiencing distress or trying to cope with difficult situations. Providing such support can prove demanding and challenging without a sound understanding of some of the positive methods that can be employed in order to listen to and support young people in an empathic and valuable way. Furthermore, staff must always be aware of their responsibilities regarding factors such as the Children’s Act, and the statutory or organisational guidelines within which they work.
The Basic Counselling Skills course is a unique course specifically designed by Procounsel, in association with the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body for staff working with children and young people. The course provides an opportunity to develop the skills of effective empathic listening, questioning, reflecting, challenging and goal-setting within a safe and clear environment. The course also addresses issues of trust, boundaries and confidentiality, Child Protection issues, referral systems and liaising with other professionals.
Our trainers are skilled at ensuring that each course reflects the needs of each group of trainees and group size is limited to 16 to ensure an optimum environment for skills practice and reflection.
We work in partnership with the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Authority, a leading examinations board, fully registered and accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.
