Bereavement - Helping Children & Young People through times of Loss

This one-day seminar is designed specifically to address issues of loss, grieving and life after separation or bereavement faced by children and young people, and those who work to support them.

This seminar addresses:

• An exploration of what can constitute bereavement or separation.

• Patterns of grieving at different ages and stages.

• Identifying the possible emotional, social, behavioural and developmental effects of bereavement on children and young people.

• Supporting peers through the terminal illness of a close relative or friend.

• Using empathic listening skills to support children and young people.

• Facilitating peer support.

• The longer term effects of bereavement.

• Developing a proactive response to bereavement within your organisation, service or school – considering a bereavement policy, and the needs of staff at such times.

Bereavement, separation or loss affects many during their early years or adolescence. Their particular needs for support and understanding can place considerable demands on those working closely with them.

A knowledge of the possible emotional, social, behavioural and developmental effects of bereavement on young people can assist in the provision of confident, empathic and appropriate support at such times.
